France

The France sign
We live pretty close to the French border. Since we had a free weekend, we decided to go to France, 'cause we could. I found some little town just over the border, but Max's work friends suggested Strasbourg. It was about 30 minutes farther away, but we decided to go anyway. So, we drove to France. :)

It took about 2 hours to get to Strasbourg. It is a beautiful town! We ended up parking quite a ways away from the center, because parking was proving difficult to find. It was a Sunday, when most things are closed, but apparently people need to park anyway. In the town center, much of it is pedestrian, so we got to walk on these beautiful cobbled streets.

Em in her new hat
There were actually more things open than we had expected. There were several little shops selling Strasbourg paraphernalia. They all had their goods out on the sidewalk. We stopped at one, and Em was admiring the hats. She saw one called Gavroche, which is her favorite character in Les Mis. She had to have it. Luckily, it was a pretty cute hat apart from the name, and Em adores hats. She wore it all day, and admired herself in every reflective surface.

We decided to check out the cathedral. We got there just as Mass was finishing, so we got to hear the spectacular organ. Then we got to see the astronomical clock chime. It was pretty cool.

We went searching for lunch, and found a charming little courtyard area. It looked just like Disney World. We stopped at a little cafe and had omlettes. It would have been quite tasty, except that mine was served tartar.

We walked around for a bit after that, and wandered our way back to the car. Em fed some swans with bread we had filched from lunch, and then we headed home.

We drove home through Munchausen, because how can you pass that up? It took us through another town called Mothern. That was the cutest town I've ever seen, I think. We passed a massive car lot in the middle of nowhere, and crossed the German border in the middle of another little town. Once minute we were in France, and then we crossed a street into Germany. It was fun.

Emma says - I always admire myself in every reflective surface. You'll be hearing more about the hat later, too. Fortunately, the evil swans didn't take my hat when I tried to feed them from my hand - on a dare from Dad.
