Heidelberg

My mom & my nephew Steven are out right now, and we've been exploring locally. We've walked around Mainz, gone to France for lunch, and have now gone to Heidelberg. We asked the kids if they'd rather see Burg Eltz, a castle that is still in good condition, or Heidelberg, a castle in ruins. After looking at pictures online, they decided on Heidelberg. So, off we went!

Heidelberg is only about an hour away. I looked online and saw approximately where the best place to park would be, and luckily, it was just right! The GPS led us almost exactly to the right parking structure. Right at the base of the parking, there was a funicular up the hill to the castle. Perfect!

This isn't even the biggest one
We got up to the top and bought our tickets and two audio tours. We figured the kids could listed to them and tell us what they said. That didn't work out as we had planned, since each stop on the audio tour was more than the kids could remember. But, we got the gist of it. The castle is beautiful, even if much of it is in ruins. You can go in the courtyard, but there are only a couple of  spot where you actually get to go in the buildings - a cellar and a part they've turned into an apothecary museum. They did have some massive wine casks in the cellar though.

Beware - bring your euros, because it costs 1 each to go to the bathroom there.

By the time we finished with the courtyard, the kids were starving, so we went back out to the little food stand they have out front. We had some very yummy sausages. Whilst eating, it started to sprinkle. Luckily, we all had our raincoats. Woo! So, we took the rest of the tour around the yards. It was lovely. I was especially happy because I had very few knee problems while there, and a lot of it was very uneven cobbling. So, I think that bodes well for my knee in Rome.

Emma says - It was really fun. It was pretty and I liked it a lot. I loved the sausages.
