UK, Day 8 - British Museum, Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Who

We got up early so that we could get to the British Museum before it opened. We didn't know what the lines would be like, but if they were anything like the lines we had seen at other museums, we wanted to be first in line. We got there, and there was no line. The lobby opens at 9, but the galleries don't open until 10. However, you can enter the lobby and look around in the gift shops, so there aren't any lines. Em hit the mother lode of Horrible Histories books. We didn't go all over the museum, that would take all day, but we got some of the kids' guides and followed those. The thing that I most wanted to see was the Rosetta Stone, and we did see that. I also wanted to see the Egyptian artifacts, because I love all things ancient Egyptian. I could have spent hours there, but we had other things we needed to do, since it was our last day. We did stop at the Dutch pancake restaurant for lunch. Max had a chicken curry pancake, Em had a lamb stew pancake, and I had an appetizer plate with lots of cheese in various forms. In case you didn't see the blog post about Amsterdam, Dutch pancakes are huge and often savory.

After the British Museum, we headed to the Sherlock Holmes museum, which was both something I wanted to do, and something for Em's patch. Max didn't care about it, but he went along with us anyway. It turned out to be pretty fun, though! They actually have two houses next to each other. 221B Baker Street is done up like the home that Sherlock Holmes & Dr. Watson shared. It's all done as if they were real people, but it also has wax figures of characters from the books. It was from the late 1800s, but it was amazing how many of the details of the house looked like our house in MD. They also have a little spot where you can sit in the sitting room dressed up like Holmes & Watson. Em & I did it, and soon afterwards, they closed it off. So, I felt pretty cool. Next door, they have the whole ground floor made into a gift shop. It was pretty impressive. In a very clever turn, you have to go all the way to the back to get your ticket to the house. It was fun enough that Max now wants to read some Holmes, and he's usually not a mysteries type of guy. Very close to Sherlock Holmes is the Beatles Store, so we popped in there for a few minutes.

After Sherlock Holmes, it was time for the Dr. Who Experience. It was the thing that Max & Em most wanted to do. It was a bit nerve-wracking getting there, because it's off of this tiny little tail of a tube station, which can only be accessed through Earl's Court. We sat on the platform a good 10 minutes seeing no trains before an announcement over the loudspeaker said that the train to Kensington Olympia comes every 20 minutes and would be there soon. As we got off the train, Max asked a girl if she knew where Dr. Who was. She said she was going there, too, so we invited her to join us. She was from California. :) She was 20, but looked very young, so we all went in together on a family ticket, with her pretending to be 16. Em loved her to death. She stayed with us the whole time, and we really enjoyed her company. She was just as chatty as Em, so they went well together. There was an "experience," but there were also lots of props and such from various seasons. It wasn't my favorite, because I don't care all that much about the show. But, I'm really glad that Max & Em got something that they really wanted, since I had chosen almost all of the other activities.

Emma says- (I feel so cool writing my own posts now!) OH. MAH. GAWD. When we went to the British Museum I was kinda sore, but I got 6 HORRIBLE HISTORIES BOOKS. 6 I TELL YOOOOOOOU. It was awesome. The Sherlock Holmes Museum/house was neat, and I got startled when one time I turned around and was like "OMG THERE'S A BIG DOG HEAD BEHIND ME!!!" It turned out to be the chupacabra hound of the Baskervilles' head. We got to take pictures. We also went to he COOLEST THING EVER it was THE DR. WHO EXPREIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEENCE *say in loud booming voice of awesomeness*. I met my "cousin" there, and we got in on a family ticket. I talked to her a lot, and she was super duper cool. WE GOT TO TAKE PICTURES IN THE TARDIS SET!!!! I can also now add "captured by Daleks" to my job application. I got pins from The British Museum, Sherlock Holmes, the Beatles Store, and Dr. Who.
