I know I was confused about our status here, so I'm guessing you are, too. We're here with the government, so we get to retain our Americanositude. We are here as guests of our military, and so we get many of the same benefits. We are able to use the PX, commissary, and pretty much all of the military facilities except medical & dental. We have ID cards, and we count as military as far as importing our stuff. We also don't have to pay the Value Added Tax on our big purchases. Which I think is kind of not right. But, it can potentially save us a lot of money, so we use it on big purchases.
One thing we can't do is live on base (fine by me, really). However, our government has some houses that it rents and lets its workers use. So, we don't have to worry about rent like a lot of the people that come over here. That makes me happy. We were just really lucky that there was a house available that would work for us. We actually took over the house of the guy that had Max's job before Max.
We are covered by the Status of Forces agreement. I'm not really sure what all that means, but it means we are allowed to homeschool! Homeschooling is illegal for Germans, but we can do so. :)
